Abstract

With this Special Issue on Transplant Oncology, the European Journal of Transplantation aims to gather an ongoing collection of papers from leading national experts in the field, thereby expanding the evidence base in this emerging area of transplant medicine. Transplant oncology has evolved into a specialized branch of transplantation, rapidly advancing across nearly every category of solid organ transplantation. This growth is characterized by interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration among surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. While primarily driven by surgical innovations, the perspective of transplant oncology extends beyond surgery to encompass the views of all professionals, patients, and stakeholders involved. The scientific literature is quickly accumulating evidence, and the pace of progress is rapid, thanks to breakthroughs in immunobiology, cancer research, medicine, intensive care, and nursing.
Integrating all these elements is essential for achieving successful outcomes in transplant oncology, and ongoing updates are necessary for implementing effective clinical practices. The current collection serves as a starting point and aims to promote further discussion, interaction, and evidence gathering.
The process has just begun; we are in a period of transformative growth and are encouraged to embrace new ideas and practices.
A huge thank you to SITO, Professor Boggi, and Professor De Carlis for their involvement in this scientific field, and to the publisher for their assistance in this effort. We all owe a deep debt of gratitude to Miss Valentina Barberi for her commitment to high standards of scientific publishing. This work could not have been possible without their invaluable support.
